Goodyear is one of the most recognizable brands in Springfield and around the United States, and not only for tires. Discover the history of this incredible brand and the tire models you should consider for your vehicle when you have MTS Express install a new set.
Building a Legacy
Goodyear got its start in 1898 when Frank Seiberling borrowed $3,500 from his brother-in-law for the down payment on an abandoned strawboard factory in Acron, Ohio. Their initial product line included carriage tires, bicycle tires, horseshoe pads, and rubber sundries. Automobile tires were added to the product line in 1899. In 1907, Goodyear sold 1,200 sets of tires to Henry Ford for use on Model T cars. By 1916, it had become the world’s largest tire company.
Not Just a Tire Brand
Goodyear has expanded into many other areas beyond rubber and tires. Rather, it was the first company to develop bulletproof gas tanks for early aircraft. It also partnered with and eventually acquired the Zeppelin company, which made rigid blimp-type airships. Most people still recognize the Goodyear blimp, the remaining remnant of this endeavor. Producing airships introduced Goodyear to military production, and is one of the reasons why it was selected as the company to produce aircraft like the Corsair fighter and B-29 bomber. They’ve also worked in the textiles industry by supplying polyester for double-knit clothing material.
Even with expertise in many other areas, the company continues to be a leader in tire manufacturing of all kinds. Here are just a few of the models you may want to consider, depending on the particular application you need.
Best General Tire
General tires are all-season tires with sizes that will fit just about every vehicle. The Assurance line is a trusted line that offers several models to meet your particular need. The ComfortDrive is a premium model that offers an ultra-quiet ride and a long tread life. It comes with a 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty, though some users report tread life up to 80,000 miles and beyond.
For drivers who want a longer tire life, you’ll want to try the Assurance MaxLife. This tire is billed as Goodyear’s longest-lasting tire, rated for 85,000 miles. It also has a lower price tag than the ComfortDrive, but many drivers complain that it produces more road noise.
SUV and Truck Tires
SUVs and consumer trucks don’t use traditional passenger tires but need tires rated for light trucks. Their heavier construction requires a different rubber compound formulation. The Fortera SL is one of the highest-rated all-season tires for SUVs, with a comfortable and smooth ride, an aggressive look, and good traction in both wet and dry conditions. Some users report that it doesn’t keep its traction in winter weather.
If you’re planning to take your truck or SUV off traditional roads, you’ll want to explore the Wrangler SR-A. This tire has low road noise for an all-terrain tire, has incredible traction on pavement, gravel, and dirt, and comes with a 50,000-mile warranty.
Goodyear Performance Tires
If you have a performance vehicle, you’ll want a performance tire to give you the best handling during your drive. The eagle Sport is an all-season performance tire that has four circumferential grooves to help improve wet traction and prevent hydroplaning. It also has impressive steering responsiveness and cornering grip and a 50,000-mile warranty.
The Eagle F1 Asymmetric All-Season tire is one of the highest-rated performance tires across all brands. One thing that sets apart the Eagle F1 is the quick steering response, which is better than most other tires in the class. However, for an all-season tire, it quickly loses its performance in ice and snow.
